Small-group travel
Skip Kyoto’s spring crowds. Go in November
The temples empty out, the maples turn crimson, and a small group with a local guide sees it before the crowds arrive.

Most visitors see Kyoto in spring, shoulder to shoulder under the cherry blossom. Autumn is the quieter secret. From early November the hills around the city turn red and gold, the mornings are cool and clear, and the famous temples are calm if you know when to go.
That timing is the whole trick. At Tofuku-ji the valley of maples fills by ten. Arrive at eight with a guide who knows the routine, and you have the bridge almost to yourself.
Twelve days, twelve people
Japan in Autumn runs from Tokyo to Kyoto by bullet train, with a night in a hot-spring inn at Hakone and a temple lodging on Mount Koya. Groups are never larger than twelve, so the guide can change the plan when the light is right.
Everything that is hard to arrange alone is done for you: the trains, the luggage sent ahead, and the dinners that need booking months in advance.
